There are several state websites that allow the public to access franchise filings free of charge.

Multiple states use this site to register their FDDs.
Begin your search with the following steps:
- In the upper righthand side of the website start with the search tab and in the dropdown menu select Franchise Search.
- Insert the name of the franchise you are trying to locate. This may bring up multiple FDDs if it is registered in multiple states.
California

California provides users with access to all documents related to franchise registration, including FDD’s, blacklines, applications, comment letters and approvals.
Here are some quick steps to get started on your search:
- Once you’ve reached the State of California’s website listed above, enter the franchise name in the ‘Legal Name’ field.
- In the ‘Application’ field, select the type you’re inquiring about from the dropdown menu, such as ‘Franchise Application.’ This will display the filing type, filing date, effective date, and any public actions.
- In the ‘Notice Type’ field, you’ll find various options indicating different types of notices, such as change in rights and privileges, franchise notice for exemption, and more. Select the relevant notice type to access specific information to aid in your search.
- Refine your search by selecting a specific date range in the ‘Filing Received From’ field.
Indiana

A simple and concise website that offers a user-friendly experience. It’s important to note that the site was established in 2019, so only registrations from 2019 to the present day are available.
Follow these steps to kick-start your search:
- On the Registration Search page, choose ‘Franchising’ from the ‘Registration Type’ options.
- In the ‘Name’ field, type in the name of the franchise you’re inquiring about.
- Choose from options like Effective, Expired, Revoked, or Terminated in the ‘Status’ field.
- To narrow down your search, enter in dates for the ‘Expiration Start Date’ and the ‘Expiration End Date.’
- After running your search, you’ll be given the Registration Type, Portfolio Number with a downloadable link, the name of the franchise, the status, and expiration date.

To ensure the most accurate results in your search, be sure to include the year. Otherwise, you will receive all registrations ever made.
Begin your search with the following steps:
- Choose an option from the ‘Area of Interest’ dropdown menu. Remember, you must make an option before you can proceed.
- Within the ‘Franchise Registrations’ subsection, you can input various details such as the Franchisor, Franchise Name, Year, File Number, Document Type (e.g., Renewal/Annual Reports), and Content Search.
- Once you click on ‘Search,’ you’ll receive a list of relevant information related to your inquiry. While you don’t need to input all pieces of information, providing more details can help refine your search.
- Lastly, you can save the list of information by selecting the “Export Page (CSV)” option.
